More than 11,000 K-pop fans signed a petition calling on Hyundai to back out of the agreement and procure materials produced from renewable energy, focusing on solar and wind, for their car production in Indonesia instead.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On March 26 2024, Hyundai Motor Company headquarters in Seoul stated by email to Kpop4Planet:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFollowing the expiry of the MoU at the end of 2023, both companies have decided not to renew it and to explore other opportunities independently. Hyundai Motor Company remains steadfast in its dedication to the responsible and sustainable sourcing of materials, ensuring the utmost transparency in our manufacturing processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The production of Adaro\u2019s aluminum is powered by coal from a newly constructed coal power plant, despite the smelter being part of a so-called \u2018green industrial park\u2019 in Kalimantan, Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The coal plant would emit an estimated 5.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711843830707000&amp;usg=AOvVaw31elAfPB7IcsRT0qm_vS2V\">Market Forces<\/a>, a climate activist group focused on engaging investors.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If Hyundai continues the plan to purchase 50,000 &#8211; 100,000 tonnes of aluminum a year from this smelter, as stated in the original MoU, Hyundai\u2019s Scope 3 emissions would increase by 3-6%, according to Market Forces. Hyundai has set a public target to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.com\/content\/dam\/hyundai\/ww\/en\/images\/company\/sustainability\/carbon-neutrality-roadmap\/hmc-2021-carbon-neutral-white-paper-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.hyundai.com\/content\/dam\/hyundai\/ww\/en\/images\/company\/sustainability\/carbon-neutrality-roadmap\/hmc-2021-carbon-neutral-white-paper-en.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711843830707000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2nNFCmCQosST84gQC-uzAo\">carbon neutrality by 2045<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">K-pop fans who partook in the campaign say this is a major win, including ARMY Indonesia, who took part as BTS is the brand ambassador for Hyundai\u2019s Ioniq EVs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe are profoundly grateful for the solidarity shown by ARMY in supporting the people of Indonesia, particularly supporting those in North Kalimantan,\u201d said Shifra Lushka, Community Leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/btsarmyinaamino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/btsarmyinaamino&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711843830708000&amp;usg=AOvVaw01RkjXf6oOLXVOXVU-q_yn\">BTS ARMY Indonesia Amino<\/a>, one of the supporters of the campaign. \u201cWe hope Hyundai will continue its collaboration with BTS, advocating for truly sustainable EVs that don\u2019t use fossil fuels harming our Earth.\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">BTS fans have collaborated closely with Kpop4Planet to collect more than 11,000 petition signatures from K-pop fans in over 68 countries. Through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Csnr5_xSP-X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Csnr5_xSP-X\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711843830708000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1l-BWqbIYvk4xxLb6ZyR6D\">offline action<\/a> in Hyundai Motorstudio in Jakarta last year, the group delivered a petition and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsqQm2qSrRH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsqQm2qSrRH\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711843830708000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0BBqWagbtzbzrL_0tqEIxV\">open letter<\/a> from fans to Hyundai\u2019s headquarters, as BTS hits \u201cMic Drop\u201d and \u201cDynamite\u201d played in the background.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe welcome Hyundai Motor\u2019s firm stance to end the MoU with Adaro, but we won\u2019t stop here,\u201d said Nurul Sarifah, Kpop4Planet\u2019s campaigner in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe, along with K-pop fans who care about our climate and future, will closely monitor Hyundai\u2019s sourcing to see if the company continues on the right path towards its commitment to carbon neutrality.
